2026 Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.

If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
